Dr. Adams is confronted by the board, who tells him that practicing medicine without a license is unlawful. His response reminds everyone of the fundamental role of doctors: to open your door to those in pain, care for patients, and listen to patients.
Dr. Omalu explains how a football player died after a series of repeated hits to the head.
To illustrate why excessive use of antibiotics is a problem, a scientist performs an experiment. He drops bacteria into a solution containing a potent, broad-spectrum antibiotic, and they survive.
Derek is tasked with performing a risky surgical procedure in order to remove a spinal tumor from a patient. He and Meredith discuss the problem and potential solutions. During the discussion, Derek draws a diagram of the spine that illustrates the issue the patient is facing. Derek faces a dilemma: if he cuts the cord, he will kill the tumor, but the patient will lose function in both of his legs. Derek tries to find a way to cure the tumor without cutting the cord.
