  • Newton: A Tale of Two Isaacs: Sir Isaac and The Apple

Physics → Gravity → Introduction to Gravity
Physics → Classical Mechanics → Newton's Law of Universal Gravitation
History → Age of Enlightenment → Isaac Newton
Sir Isaac Newton ponders why the planets orbit the sun and what allows them to maintain that orbit. Very soon after he sits down under an apple tree, Humphrey bangs his head against one of the limbs, causing an apple to fall on Newton's head. It is at this moment that Isaac Newton has an epiphany and starts to develop the concept of gravity.

  • Newton: A Tale of Two Isaacs: Laws of Motion Fight

Physics → Newton's Laws of Motion → First Law
Physics → Newton's Laws of Motion → Third Law
Physics → Newton's Laws of Motion → Second Law
    Science → Physics → Dynamics
A fight breaks out, and Isaac Newton watches the quarrel and draws conclusions about forces based on his observations. Each boy is considered a mass, and each of their pushes is a force. At the end of the scuffle, Newton labels his conclusions "The Laws of Motion." This clip is an excellent depiction of Newton's laws of motion in a real-world context.

  • Newton: A Tale of Two Isaacs: Gravity Presentation

Science → Scientific Method → Peer Review
Physics → Classical Mechanics → Newton's Law of Universal Gravitation
    Physics → Gravity → Inverse-square Law
Newton presents his findings on gravity to a group of scientists. Among the attendees are Sir Robert Hooke. During his explanation of the inverse-square law, Newton notices that Hooke appears to be stealing his work, so he abruptly ends his presentation.
